tracing COVID-19

On March 19, 2020, Los Angeles shut down. We were told we were “safer at home.” So, how to amuse myself in a two bedroom apartment for an indeterminate period of time? I decided to make a drawing every day by tracing from photos I shot. Thus TRACING COVID-19 (somebody had to do it) was born.

I drew every single day for 13 months. 395 drawings.

In May 2021, I was encouraged to compile the drawings (and captions I’d written) into books, which became a TRACING COVID-19 four volume set. The volumes are: Safer At Home; Around Sawtelle; The Sawtelle Squirrels; and The Sawtelle Cones & Posts. All drawings in the books are reproduced at actual 4” x 4” size.

BELOW are the covers and several page spreads from each of the four volumes.

SAFER AT HOME

SAFER AT HOME

Like everyone else, “safer at home” started with stocking up, cooking, and filling the freezer in case I got sick. At first, food and hygiene were all I could think about. I began by drawing whatever was in front of me around the apartment; drawers opened and stories unfolded. Food, appliances, my car, desk, memories, and clothing—all turned into fodder for drawings. My explorations definitely amused me.

AROUND SAWTELLE

AROUND SAWTELLE

Although “safer at home,” I ventured outside to explore my Sawtelle neighborhood each day. The things I saw became my drawings: flowers blooming in likely and unlikely places; animal life, wild and domestic; the detritus of the pandemic; businesses open or, sadly, shuttered. I became familiar with neighborhood cats, watched flowers go through their cycles of blooming, noticed art on sidewalks and parking strips.

THE SAWTELLE SQUIRRELS

THE SAWTELLE SQUIRRELS

Constantly looking at flowers and plants led me to consider the fauna in my neighborhood, which boasts a large squirrel population. Through research I discovered that Sawtelle is ground zero for Eastern Fox Squirrels in Los Angeles. Digging deeper and deeper into squirrel data, I drew charts and diagrams to convey information. I interwove squirrel stories with maps of Sawtelle. I soon slid down a rabbit hole with the squirrels.

THE SAWTELLE CONES & POSTS

THE SAWTELLE CONES & POSTS

One day in July 2020, I saw a traffic post and two traffic cones standing on a corner as if they were waiting to cross the street. I began to see Cone and Post clans all over the neighborhood, engaged in various activities. Individual cones and posts quickly took on personalities as they went about their business, and their stories simply had to be told.
