MTA Metro Art CNG Bulkhead Art Decals Project
one of 5 designs chosen for the project
95.5" x 39"; 2001

designed in collaboration with Alex Donis

PROJECT BRIEF
"MTA Metro Art invites artist and artist teams to propose work for the interior bulkhead panels of the MTA compressed natural gas buses. Each work will be photo-reproduced onto state of the art adhesive decals for actual application to the bulkheads. Located directly above the rear row of seats, the bulkhead panel is a major visual component of the bus interior.

"STOP REQUESTED" DESCRIPTION
This image is a composite photograph that uses the one aspect common to all MTA commuters: the act of requesting a stop. In this piece, passengers are let out (or brought in from) a fantastic prehistoric world. In "Stop Requested," pedestrians jaywalk in front of a huge cement prehistoric lizard, while a bus dodges giant dinosaurs*. All of this occurs under the busdriver's watchful eye (who is caught grinning from the rear view mirror).

ALEX & TINA'S ARTIST STATEMENT
Having traveled and photographed the busiest Metro bus lines throughout Los Angeles—from Mid-Wilshire into downtown, form Chinatown into East Los Angeles and alternate bus lines into the areas of South Gate, Santa Monica, Inglewood, and South Central LA—we (the artist team) have come to the conclusion that the most rewarding part of riding the bus system is the chance to daydream.

* We photographed the life-sized dinosaurs at Baconao Park outside Santiago de Cuba, Cuba in December 2000.
